Kira: I’m a lawyer by education but today I work at PwC with Tax in shipping, oil and energy industries.

Intro to Kira Hellmann

I studied law at the University of Copenhagen where I finished my master’s degree in 2020. Today, I work at PwC with Tax in shipping, oil and energy industries.

Why did you join the PwC graduate programme?

My neighbor who works in auditing at PwC spoke very highly of PwC and recommended me to apply. At the time, I was working part-time in a law firm and had the opportunity to become an assistant attorney but that didn’t feel like the right path for me. I knew I wanted to work with company law and tax law which I was able to do at PwC in their tax department. Therefore, I ended up applying and the rest is history.

What attracted you to the programme?

For me, it was the opportunity to work in the intersection of law and tax with a large variety of customer cases. In the end, it was an easy decision to apply because I knew I wanted to work on something which interested me and I would advise other law graduates to do the same. You don’t have to follow “the expected” path of becoming a lawyer if you don’t have the interest. There are a lot of interesting options out there.

What has surprised you the most about working at PwC

I have now been a part of PwC for two years and when I look back, I can see how much I have learned and grown both professionally and personally. I also think the fellowship between colleagues is unique. We have a fun and dynamic work environment where we do a lot of social activities together such as working out or going for dinner after work.

Most interesting project

The most exciting part of my job in PwC is that I get to work with various and different projects covering most aspects within Danish and International corporate tax law. If I have to name a few that I’ve especially enjoyed, I would have to say my work with due diligence projects, restructurings and assisting clients with cases appealed to the national tax and appeals court.

You don’t have to follow “the expected” path of becoming a lawyer if you don’t have the interest. There are a lot of interesting options out there.

Any advice for new applicants?

Make sure you focus on the experience you have gathered so far in your career. Particularly focused on any part time roles you have had that are relevant to the role you are applying for.I would also advise new applicants not to be daunted by the fact that PwC is a large employer. We have a very open and diverse culture where you can be yourself. So if you would like to develop your career in a welcoming and social environment PwC is the place for you.
