Asger from Lidl’s graduate programme: I was drawn to Lidl’s culture of innovation and its willingness to take risks

I hold a degree in International Marketing from Lidl Denmark and am presently undergoing an overseas rotation in the southern region of Germany, specifically in Neckarsulm, the location of Lidl’s International Headquarters. Within Lidl International, I’m engaged in the development of the Food Aktion Sortimentsentwicklung. This department focuses on curating a selection within the “Food Theme” category, ensuring its availability across all Lidl countries, spanning over 12,000 stores worldwide.

 

How did you end up at the Lidl Graduate Programme?

The retail sector has always intrigued me, and Lidl’s dynamic and innovative reputation made it an exceptionally enticing workplace. Upon encountering the advertisement for the Lidl Graduate Programme, I felt compelled to apply. The program’s emphasis on cultivating versatile business leaders capable of driving substantial change within the company resonated deeply with my career aspirations.

What attracted you to Lidl as an employer?

Lidl captivated me for various reasons. Initially, its dedication to offering superior products at reasonable prices left a strong impression. Secondly, the culture of innovation and the company’s readiness to embrace risks stood out to me. Thirdly, Lidl’s commitment to employee development and career advancement was admirable. Lastly, the significant opportunity for employees to work abroad and ignite their international careers was incredibly appealing to me.

 

What has been the highlight of being a graduate at Lidl so far?

My experience as a Lidl graduate has been defined by engaging in diverse and demanding projects, learning from seasoned professionals, and being an integral part of Lidl International in Germany. Understanding and tackling the challenges faced by the organization in supporting various countries has been immensely insightful. Moreover, honing my German language proficiency and establishing connections with fellow graduates globally have been standout experiences during my journey at Lidl.

What has surprised you the most about working at Lidl?

The level of independence and accountability I’ve been entrusted with as a graduate at Lidl has been pleasantly surprising. Equally impressive is the company’s commitment to investing in its employees, offering numerous developmental prospects. Delving deeper into the Danish division, I’ve been amazed by the organization’s flat structure and minimal hierarchy, fostering a culture that values collaboration and open communication.

 

Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?

Adapting to the rapid pace at Lidl has been the most significant challenge as a graduate. The company operates dynamically, where changes occur swiftly. Nevertheless, I’ve discovered that this very aspect, while challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. Embracing and navigating this fast-paced environment has been both demanding and fulfilling.

 

Advice to other applicants?

My advice to other applicants is to be passionate about retail and to have a strong understanding of the industry. It is also important to be able to work independently and to be comfortable with making decisions. Finally, it is important to be a team player and to be able to work effectively with others.

 

How do you see your future with Lidl?

I’m genuinely enthusiastic about the prospects ahead at Lidl. My commitment to the company is unwavering, and I hold the confidence to significantly contribute to its continued success. My aspiration to pursue a career in management aligns well with what Lidl offers, and I believe the company will provide the perfect platform for me to achieve this goal.
