Rasmus Graduate from Energinet: When I think back on all that I have learned in just one year, I can hardly comprehend it.

I started working at Energinet straight after I finished my Master’s degree at Aalborg University. I am currently working in Energinet’s Process Center of Excellence which is tasked with raising the process maturity in Energinet by ensuring a systematic approach to process work, that supports cohesion across the enterprise.

Before that, I worked 8 months at Energinet’s internal ERP department, which handles Energinet’s functional areas. My role in this department was primarily various Scrum Master tasks. Starting next year, I will join a 3rd department in Energinet, which can help to strengthen my overall picture of this large and complex organization.

How did you end up at the Energinet Graduate Programme?

When you attend university, you will often feel a lot of pressure to go out and find an exciting job, even though you may not quite know where your skills lie. IT management is a great master’s degree which explores a wide range of topics that I was interested in, such as agile methods, process optimization and programming. At this time, I was nervous about finding a job in a field wherein I would only have the opportunity to go down one of these paths. This worry played a big role in my job search.

I graduated in June 2022, but was already looking for work many months before. Here I found the job advertisement for the Graduate programme at Energinet, and it was just what I had hoped to find. The possibility to weave together my very own rotation courses, in which I could explore the various topics from my education, seemed almost too good to be true.

I was incredibly impressed by Energinet’s branding and focus on attracting new young employees. Therefore, I knew that it was a workplace in which things would not be stale but were – on the contrary – in rapid development.

What attracted you to Energinet as an employer?

Energinet faces a major task through the conversion of Denmark to green energy as well as cooperation with other European TSOs. Working for a large organization in which all employees and departments work towards the same goal was incredibly exciting as a new graduate. In combination with the fact that I knew I could develop an incredible amount in just 2 years, I had no doubt that Energinet was the organization I wanted to work for.

What has been the highlight of being a graduate at Energinet so far?

I have been a graduate for a little over a year at Energinet. When I think back on all that I have learned in just one year, I can hardly comprehend it.

Through my work in the ERP department, I have gained an insight into the machinery and the complexity involved that drives all organizations. Particularly in this department, I learned how organizations are interconnected and how different stakeholders have different goals and interests. Although we are working towards the same goal regarding conversion to green energy, partial deliveries in a quarter can often mean more here and now for the individual manager.

After changing rotations, I have had the opportunity to further develop my skills in change management and process optimization, which is something that interested me immensely during my education. If I had not been a graduate at Energinet, I would probably not have had the opportunity to develop in several areas in such a short time.

So, the fact that I can develop various skills within such a short time is definitely the highlight of my time as a graduate at Energinet so far.

I was incredibly impressed by Energinet's branding and focus on attracting new young employees. Therefore, I knew that it was a workplace in which things would not be stale but were - on the contrary - in rapid development.
Rasmus, Graduate Energinet

What has surprised you the most about working at Energinet?

What has clearly surprised me the most is how accommodating my colleagues are. When you are a new employee straight out of university and are told: “Just ask person X and they will explain it to you”, you very much feel like you are wasting their time because they have to explain a subject to “at new guy like me”. But as it turns out, my colleagues at Energinet love to teach their colleagues, and coffee meetings have  quickly become a part of my working culture.

Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?

Although it is great to be able to deepen your skills in different departments at Energinet, it is no secret, that changing departments every 8 months can be a big challenge. Suddenly you must put all your knowledge from the last 8 months in the back of your mind and start all over again. It’s almost like starting a new job. It can be very taxing at the time, and you don’t come home with much extra energy. Fortunately, you get trained in the ability to get used to new material quickly, which makes it easier each time, but it is undoubtedly the biggest challenge.

Advice to other applicants?

I believe that being a graduate at Energinet has been the best start my career could have hoped for, so if you can see yourself in some of the thoughts I have shared, please do not hesitate to apply for the opportunity. Even though you are new, you get a lot of responsibility if you want it – so it is entirely up to you how you want to shape your career. Even though only a few get the opportunity to join our graduate programme each year, it could be you, so please do not hesitate to apply.

How do you see your future with Energinet?

Although my graduate contract expires in less than a year, I have no doubt that I will be at Energinet for many years to come. I have had the opportunity to make many good connections in the organization, which is why I have no doubt that I will find my right place. Fortunately, nothing is static in Energinet, and we are very interested in developing our employees – graduates or not. Therefore, I know that Energinet will ensure my development for many years to come.
