Stine from Valcon: When I started, I had one week of introduction before I was sent directly to a client

Intro to Stine

Before coming to Valcon, I studied economics at Aarhus University and worked at Vestas as a student worker. In September 2021, I enrolled in Valcon’s graduate programme and have worked as a consultant at Valcon ever since. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to work with several different industries through various projects ranging from strategy and cost-out to process optimisation. I’m also a part of the sustainability team where I have been working with both environmental and social sustainability.

How did you end up at the company/when and where did you first hear about it?

During my studies, I was a member of a student organisation that arranged a yearly trip to Copenhagen where we visited a variety of interesting companies. One year, we visited Valcon where I for the first time was introduced to the opportunities of Valcon’s graduate programme. I was hooked from thereon!

What attracted you to the company?

When I researched the company, I quickly realised that Valcon’s goals and values fitted well into what I looked for in a first full-time job. When I started my recruitment process, that perception fitted very well with the people I met – everyone was competent, honest, friendly and inclusive! Having been at Valcon for over a year, that (luckily) still holds.

Why did you want to join a consulting firm?

My interest in consulting originates from my studies where I was introduced to several consulting companies that taught us about life as a consultant. Being exposed to various problems, business areas and clients was very appealing to me.

What has surprised you the most about working at the company?

When I started, I had one week of introduction before I was sent directly to a client. I was surprised by the high level of responsibility and trust you get from your very first day. I didn’t just have to sit behind the desk working on internal projects, I actually got to do something very interesting and insightful with clients. For me, the best way to learn is by doing, and I could immediately feel that my capabilities started to build.

What is your superpower, professionally speaking? What are you really good at?

I would say my main strength lies in building relationships and speaking to and understanding clients. I really enjoy working together with people, building teams and helping create solutions that will bring the client great value.

Biggest challenge as a consultant so far?

Being a consultant at Valcon is a fun but challenging job, and you get offered lots of different opportunities – many that can be difficult to say no to. The main challenge for me was – and still is – to learn to say no and acknowledge and respect my personal limits. Fortunately, I don’t have to learn this entirely on my own, because at Valcon, everyone is assigned a development leader who supports personal and professional development. Every second week, I check in with my development leader who offers pieces of advice – for example, how to ask for help or how to balance my workload when I work on more than one project at a time. This has been a crucial element for me to thrive in my new role as a consultant.

Advice to other applicants?

When I interview new potential colleagues, the most important aspect for me is their motivation for working here. It makes a difference for me if I’m able to tell that the candidate did their research and is committed to working specifically for Valcon. Your first job should be a good experience, so my advice is to apply to companies where you can see yourself thriving in the long run. Being genuine and enthusiastic about the job will surely reflect in the interview.
