Energinet: an organization where everyone works toward a shared goal.

Intro to the graduate

I started as a Graduate at Energinet immediately after completing my master’s degree in Energy Systems Engineering from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in the summer of 2023.

Currently, in my second rotation, I work in the department, Management Support, focusing on facilitating strategic processes and change management.

My first rotation was in the department, Ancillary Services, which is dedicated to flexibility and balancing of the electricity grid to ensure a high level of supply security, both now and in the future.

At the beginning of next year, I will start my final rotation in a third department, where I am excited to explore a new role and gain further insights into this complex and dynamic organization.

When did you first hear about the Graduate Programme?

At the beginning of my studies, I learned about the Graduate Programme at Energinet when former graduates with my exact degree promoted it at an educational fair. Throughout my studies, I kept the programme in mind, as I couldn’t imagine a better way to start my career than by exploring various positions within the company while focusing on my professional and personal growth. It’s a unique chance to gain diverse experiences and build a strong foundation within the company.

What made you apply to the programme?

To attend the assessment day in person, I had to fly all the way from Greenland, where I was living while writing my master’s thesis. Even though I wasn’t sure if I’d be one of the selected few, I knew this was an incredible opportunity to kickstart my career, and I couldn’t risk missing it.

In many ways, Energinet is an ideal fit for an Energy Systems Engineer like me. Energinet contribute directly to making the renewable energy system of the future a reality. It’s possible to work closely with grid operations, plan and build infrastructure to support increased renewable energy, engage in dialogue with stakeholders, and much more. Thereby being the perfect place to try out many different aspects of the skills and interests I had gained from my studies.

What has been the highlight of being a graduate so far?

It is incredibly motivating to be part of an organization where everyone works toward a shared goal: making the green transition a reality. I feel very lucky to not only have job so meaningful, while focusing on my personal growth, exploring different roles within the organization, and expanding my skill set. Looking back on my first year, it’s inspiring to see how much I’ve learned and the exciting projects I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to.

What has surprised you the most about working at the company?

With so many diverse departments working on different projects, each one plays a unique role in enabling the green transition and contributing to a sustainable future. What surprised me the most was the sheer range of opportunities Energinet offers. The number of departments and projects that interest me far exceeds the three rotations I’ll have during the programme.

What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a graduate so far?

Switching between rotations feels much like starting three new job positions within just two years. It’s both rewarding and challenging to leave behind tasks and knowledge each time and begin in a different department.

Having the courage to choose a rotation beyond my usual field and the traditional skill set of an energy systems engineer has been invaluable but challenging. My first two rotations have been very different. My first department relied heavily on my technical skills and understanding of the mechanisms in the energy system, while my current role focuses on strategy, processes and communication, which is far from the classic engineering mindset and outside my comfort zone.

What advice do you have to other applicants that are considering applying for the programme?

It is a fantastic way to start your career, as you are given a lot of responsibility and the opportunity to shape your career your way. I cannot recommend the programme at Energinet enough to any student considering applying. It is an incredible opportunity to launch your professional career by accelerating your personal development, trying out various positions, and challenging yourself while working for a greener future.
