Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Electrical Engineering

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: July 2025

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £24,700 plus a bonus.

Role 1 – Facilities & Utilities

Locations available – Montrose

Overview of the Department

Our 45-acre primary manufacturing site at Montrose is located between the North Sea and the Angus Glens and is within easy reach of Dundee and Aberdeen. The Electrical Engineering department at GSK Montrose is a small team, within the larger engineering function, that is responsible for all the Electrical Assets on site. Your successful delivery of this role is important for the site as it provides support to the Electrical Engineering team to ensure manufacturing quotas are met whilst still carrying out statutory electrical maintenance and minimising equipment downtime.

Key Placement Activities

  • Safe control, operation and maintenance of the electrical utility, systems and apparatus.
  • Responsible for Shutdown, Emergency and Business Continuity/Contingency planning for the electricity network.
  • Develop the Site Electrical Strategy and champion related projects in conjunction with the Site Infrastructure and Site Development plans.
  • Approving the selection and installation of electrical equipment for safe and hazardous areas in line with all company standards.
  • Management and completion of high voltage switching operations.
  • Evaluates electrical engineering problems and make decisions on technical issues.
  • Make recommendations on technically complex issues that have a potential business impact.
  • Take account of legal, regulatory and financial implications of engineering standards and changes.
  • Ensure that asset care activities and the selection/installation of electrical equipment are performed in a compliant manner.

Role 2 – Electrical Engineering Operations

Locations available – Ware

Overview of the Department

Electrical Engineering Operations team support the ware campus in maintaining compliance to GSK ES and local regulations. They support site teams across all aspects of electrical engineering and energy management including: HV/LV Power, Lighting, Lightning protection, UPS, Battery Systems, Fire Detection, Conveyors, Energy Management.

Role 3 – Capital Projects Engineering

Locations available – Ware

Overview of the Department

The Ware Capital Projects Team are responsible for the delivery of investments and upgrades across the campus, including manufacturing and R&D Infrastructure from inception through to closeout. We are responsible for a wide range of projects from welfare and office refurbishment through the quality critical manufacturing equipment and facilities. We deliver approximately £30m per annum in site investment, so there is plenty of opportunity for interesting and varied projects.

Key Placement Activities

  • Assist in the planning and execution of capital projects, including site expansions, facility upgrades, and equipment installations.
  • Support project managers in developing project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
  • You will also have the opportunity to lead your own project activities
  • Conduct research and gather data to support project feasibility studies and risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, procurement, EHS, quality and operations, to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Participate in site inspections, safety audits, and quality control checks.
  • Prepare and present project reports, status updates, and technical documentation.

Role 4 – Electrical Infrastructure Engineer

Locations available – Worthing

Overview of the Department

With the current trend of electrifying services, the GSK Worthing site electrical infrastructure is constantly adapting and improving to facilitate this goal. With capital investment agreed, new substations are being installed with the exciting proposal of several large PV arrays which are in line with the company’s sustainable energy pledge. Alongside the LV/HV infrastructure works, we have ongoing works to improve safety critical services such as the fire alarm to ensure the system is compliant with British Standards. Furthermore, the team also supports the internal Manufacturing, Packaging and Utilities departments which offers a great insight into each department and how they are fundamental to the GSK Worthing site.

Key Placement Activities

  • Investigating new engineering technologies to improve plant and maintenance techniques.
  • Development and implementation of maintenance best practice.
  • Supporting delivery of electrical installations, remedial and improvement works
  • Specifying new equipment and components
  • Performing root cause analysis investigations and contributing to safety and quality risk assessments
  • Carrying out continuous improvement activities to ensure good manufacturing practice
  • Developing a thorough understanding of the equipment, plant and processes used at the site including electrical design of systems and the ability to problem solve
  • Developing skills for leading and managing groups of peers or contractors to achieve the above
  • Developing skills in planning projects such as plant modifications, building turnarounds, capital projects and Electrical infrastructure improvements

Role 5 – Electrical Engineering Site Services

Locations available – Barnard Castle

Overview of the Department

The Barnard Castle site is located in the Northeast of England and is sited within the County Durham countryside. Barnard Castle is a key secondary site for GSK with a large number of New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceutical products from Sterile Products (Syringes and Vials) to Liquid Inhalations and Dermatologicals. We have recently opened a new state of the art aseptic digital facility producing biopharmaceuticals.

The Electrical Engineering department in Barnard Castle is a small team of engineers operating within the wider Engineering function. On your placement you will work closely between the site Projects and Site Services Maintenance team, helping ensure our systems are safe and compliant and that our electrical infrastructure provides a reliable supply to the manufacturing site. Additional to the day- to- day electrical engineering tasks that you will undertake, you will also be aligned to several key electrical projects for the site. In these projects you will offer technical and, in some cases, administrative support. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in real world design and implementation of High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) projects around the site as well as utility improvement projects. Equally importantly you will learn and understand statutory requirements in electrical systems and ensure the adherence to all requirements.
