Katarzyna from NNIT: Specializing in DevOps and great mentorship were my top priorities

How did you end up at the Graduate Programme / when and where did you first hear about it?

I heard about the graduate programs at NNIT from a friend and about the same time I participated in career days at ITU where they were attending showcasing NNIT as a workplace. I was about to finish my degree looking for a direction to take in my career and I found starting on a graduate program the most attractive out of the available options for me at that time.

What attracted you to the company?

I enjoy being introduced to new things often and quickly adjust to new environments, therefore it was important for me to find a workplace where I would be challenged and develop on these parameters and NNIT offered just that.

Being part of NNIT meant an opportunity to work on different projects for customers across various industries, allowing me to get a glimpse of the company culture and the ways of working both in NNIT and at our customers, which is an extremely valuable experience for me. On top of all that, the graduate program specializing in the field of DevOps was what stood out to me the most, as I thought it was quite unique and aligned well with my interests, making it an easy choice.

Why did you want to join a graduate program?

Being part of a graduate program is a great way to softly transition from university life to a full-time job. I saw it as an opportunity to continue intensive education in a specialized field while getting work experience in real industry projects.

The possibility to get trained in an area I didn’t have much experience in from my studies and having a good amount of time allocated just for learning, while being mentored every step of the way and develop the soft skills as well as technical skills, is incredibly valuable to me.

What has surprised you the most about working at the company?

The importance of good work-life balance, as well as general flexibility in working hours. Especially because NNIT is a consulting company, which tends to have a certain stereotype around working hours. It was a pleasant surprise to see that I have a big influence on organizing my time, which contributes to me being able to produce the best output and makes juggling all my responsibilities and hobbies much easier.

Be confident and curious and don’t underestimate your possibilities. Your drive and approach to taking on challenges mean more than you think, making the rest of the process more gratifying.

Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?

There are two things that I found particularly challenging. Learning new technologies has always been a smooth process to me, but developing the soft skills requires a different kind of effort that has a lot to do with leaving your comfort zone. Therefore, learning how to properly communicate with clients as a consultant has been a challenge for me – but at the same time a very rewarding and interesting one.

The other one was coming to terms with the fact that I can’t be an expert and know how to do all things right away, while maintaining the confidence to do the job. On a related note, getting used to asking for help from colleagues instead of trying to master every singly topic within the field.

Advice to other applicants?

Be confident and curious and don’t underestimate your possibilities. Your drive and approach to taking on challenges mean more than you think, making the rest of the process more gratifying.

The right work environment can bring out many great things in you so it’s important to find that good fit. Remember to pursue your interests and develop on several different levels in your career making it a better journey early on.
