Intro to Kristine
I graduated in June 2021 from University of Southern Denmark (SDU) with a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics. Right now, I am doing my second rotation in our office in Ballerup. I have decided to challenge myself both personally and professionally by choosing to work with business development regarding data management, which is not the obvious choice with my background. In my first rotation I was in our office in Fredericia, where I worked with optimizing and implementing algorithms in Python which are used to determine where to extend the transmission network for electricity. For my third (and last) rotation I am joining a team of data scientists, where we are going to develop forecasting models. The model will based on machine learning predict how much electricity we can expect from solar cells on a given day.
How did you end up at the Graduate Programme / when and where did you first hear about it?
SDU had a virtual fair where many different graduate programs attended, which inspired me to look for graduate program which made sense for me both regarding location and personal interest, and Energinet ticked both boxes! Especially the fact that someone with a non-engineering background could be a part of the green transition in Denmark was a selling for me. I sent my application, was chosen to participate in the assessment day and based on that I was offered the position.

What attracted you to the company?
Energinet is driving the green transition in Denmark, which in my opinion is a very important agenda! Furthermore, Energinet has a lot of focus on work-life balance and a great flexibility in when and where you work, as all employees have a workstation at home. Since Energinet is a big company, there are many possibilities for advancing your career based on your wishes. In my opinion a graduate program is a really good way to kickstart your career, as you have so many possibilities for both personal and professional development.
Furthermore, Energinet has a very broad graduate programme where my graduate colleges have many different backgrounds such as engineering, science, political science, and business. It makes our discussions more nuanced and gives a great perspective on different ways to drive the green transition.
Why did you want to join a graduate program?
The fact that you do not have to choose one direction, but you get the opportunity to professionally try different things was a great selling point for me. I was a little unsure what I wanted to do with my degree, and I was sure there was possibilities I yet still was unaware of. Additionally, it was attractive to start my professional journey with a network of 12 other graduates.
What has surprised you the most about working at the company?
Since Energinet is the Danish transmission operator for both electricity and gas, we have had the opportunity to visit multiple substations. Every time we visit, I am equally surprised by how BIG everything is. This is for instance both the transformers and converters regarding electricity, and the compressors regarding gas. It is always fascinating to see the real world, instead of assessing everything from behind a desk.

Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?
In Energinet we choose ourselves in which department we want to do the second and third rotation. My biggest challenge has been to choose between the many interesting possibilities Energinet has to offer, when choosing my rotations.
Advice to other applicants?
You will never get another opportunity to kickstart your career like this again, so just go for it! If you are up for it, it will be a unique way to both focus at your personal and professional development and learn so much along the way.
