How did you end up at the L’Oréal Graduate/Trainee Programme?

There are many reasons why I ended up at the L’Oréal Trainee Programme. However, to simplify it I knew that I wanted to work in a global leading company to learn how a successful business works and to take advantage of the opportunities that a market leader can offer to you as an employee. I was searching for trainee roles, as I was intrigued by getting the opportunity to try different roles before deciding on a distinct path for my career. When I enrolled in the interview process, I got a better understanding of the L’Oréal culture, which seemed energetic, social and entrepreneurial. This was exactly what I was hoping for when applying to the role and combined with the other aspects mentioned earlier, it felt like a great fit for me personally.

What attracted you to L’Oréal as an employer?

The main thing that initially drew me to L’Oréal was its reputation as a long-standing market leader. I figured a company that has thrived for so long must have a solid business model, one that can weather economic storms and changing trends. I knew I could learn a lot from an organization like that, both professionally and personally, and it felt exciting to work in the beauty industry which I previously had no experience from. What truly sets L’Oréal apart, however, is the freedom within responsibility and autonomy it offers from day one. I was particularly drawn to the emphasis on empowering trainees to take ownership of their projects and the flexibility to explore different roles, brands, divisions, and even countries. This opportunity to shape my own career path as a confused university graduate felt exciting and comforting, as I could not pinpoint exactly what I wanted to work with professionally.

What has been the highlight of being a trainee at L’Oréal?

The best thing of being a trainee is undoubtedly getting trusted from day one on your own projects and the variety of possibilities that come with having rotations in different roles. The highlight of the experience was for sure getting involved in as many projects as I could as it led me to some great experiences, like participating in the world’s biggest cross country ski race Vasaloppet, attending the Musik i Lejet festival and gaining some fantastic friends along the way.

What has surprised you the most about working at L’Oréal?

What surprised me most is balance between a fast-paced, dynamic environment and a genuinely supportive culture. Things move quickly here, which is exciting, but it’s never at the expense of teamwork and collaboration. People are always willing to lend a hand, explain things to you or grab a coffee with you. It’s a supportive and stimulating environment.

Biggest challenge as a trainee?

The biggest challenge has been navigating the complexities of a large, global organization. Understanding the intricacies of different divisions, departments and how they interact requires ongoing learning and adaptability, especially considering that you are thrown into action from day one. However, you quickly get used to the fast-paced environment and you figure things out this as you go along. Luckily, you have understanding and helpful colleagues that help you along the way.

Advice to other applicants?

One piece of advice I’d give to applicants is to be open, positive and showcase your willingness to work for the company in the application process. It is a good idea to research L’Oréal and show that you have some understanding of the business and company. If you get a position, I encourage you to be proactive and look for opportunities beyond your immediate responsibilities. Get involved, and you’ll be surprised at what pops up. Be prepared to contribute from the start and make the most of every opportunity. You dictate quite a lot what your scope is and the opportunities that you will receive.

How do you see your future with L’Oréal?

I see my future with L’Oréal as a journey of continuous learning and growth. The trainee program has provided me with a valuable foundation, and I’m eager to explore different areas of the business going forward. I’ve now been in my current role for a little over two months and I’m really focused on making the most of this experience and contributing as much as I can. Looking ahead, I’m curious to explore a different function at some point to broaden my understanding of how all the pieces fit together within L’Oréal. Long-term, I envision myself growing within the company into a capable manager and leader.
