Ludvig from BEC: I’m able to bring my knowledge within design processes and project management to help solve our customers problems

About Ludvig

Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Design & Innovation from DTU – Technical University of Denmark

Business Analyst Graduate from August 1st (but I started in May where I got the chance to participate in the end of the previous graduate program). Working in the Online Banking Team.

How did you end up at the Graduate Programme / when and where did you first hear about it?

I had never heard of BEC before I attended the course X-tech Entrepreneurship on my second last semester. My group was assigned to work with an exciting case presented by BEC. The goal was to come up with a solution helping young people keeping an overview of their finances because too many ends up in the ‘RKI’ the register of bad payers.

What attracted you to the company?

My group had numerous meetings with BEC and it seemed that they were genuinely interested in our problem analysis work and our creativity towards developing a concept, as they spent much time on advising and providing feedback. I’m not educated in IT, specifically, but I have extensive training within design processes and project management. I felt that I could bring my knowledge within design thinking and mediating business needs to tech development to contribute to the development of useful products.

Why did you want to join a graduate program?

I wanted to join the graduate program because I think it’s a perfect way to start my first real full-time job after university. BEC offered a well-structured, year long onboarding program where I’m not the only new guy. I thought it was attractive to get a network of other graduates from the very beginning. Partly for the social part including having other young like-minded friends to hang out with at parties and at our own social gatherings. But also professionally as I do not only have my team but I have a network across several departments which is very useful when working on projects with dependencies in other teams.

I love learning so it sounded great to me to continue learning at graduate courses even though university is over and there are plenty of courses spread across the year, so it becomes a great mix of working and learning.

What has surprised you the most about working at the company?

It has surprised me how much freedom and independence I have in my work as a business analyst. Sometimes I almost wish I was micromanaged more because some problems are so open that it can be hard to figure how to attack them. But it is amazing to get that much mandate and responsibility because I really feel that it makes me grow professionally.

Focus on bringing value. It will drive you to reach out to the people you need as you most likely cannot make significant changes without doing exactly that.

Biggest challenge as a graduate so far?

The biggest challenge is figuring out all the complicated interdependencies between different business and tech areas. It is hard to estimate how long it takes to deliver even small changes as there are almost always multiple stakeholders that must be involved. If you change one thing, you might break another system so there are many processes tests in place that you must also learn to plan for.

Advice to other applicants?

Focus on bringing value. It will drive you to reach out to the people you need as you most likely cannot make significant changes without doing exactly that.

In the beginning where you do not know much about anything, be courageous enough to ask people to help you even though you feel you might disturb them. You do not. They need you to grow and become a good colleague. Most times all they need is YOU to give them an excuse to take a break from their own tasks and help you instead. So, give them that excuse by reaching out.
